An analysis of dance techniques and styles in contemporary culture
It is the purpose of the course to analyse and examine in depth some of the best-known techniques and styles of theatrical dance (Classical ballet, Graham, Butoh), by way of advanced-level lessons both practical and theoretical.

Teaching objectives
The student will learn how to analyse movement and the specific aesthetic and stylistic aspects of various genres; the student will obtain theoretical knowledge on the history and poetics of these genres, and will perfect their practical execution.
Target group and prerequisites for admission
Participants (15) must be enrolled in either first- or second-level degree university programmes in Italy or abroad, and they must have a good practical knowledge of almost one of the dance techniques proposed. Selection will be based on the student’s CV and a letter of recommendation written by a professor
General information
The course presents dance techniques and styles from different places, times, cultures;
The classical ballet, a pure one-hundred-year-old European tradition, viewed in the intense stylistic modalities of the Paris Opéra, where it originated;
American modern dance, developed during the first half of the twentieth century, in the original but still very meaningful version of its founder, Martha Graham;
Contemporary Japanese Butoh dance, which began after the Second World War and is now known the world over.
The course lasts a total of 70 hours, divided into 45 hours of practical workshop, 20 hours of historical-critical-analytical lessons (seminars), and 5 hours of other cultural activities.
The course is taught over a ten-day period (for two weeks from Monday to Friday). Each day includes 3 practical 90-minute lessons (90 X 3) for each of the styles and a 2-hour seminar.
The following topics will be discussed during the seminars:
Elements of movement analysis; The classical ballet in history and culture; Technique and language of dance in the Paris Opéra tradition;Martha Graham in history and culture; Movement and language of dance in the Graham technique; Japanese Butoh dance in history and culture; Movement and choreic style in the Butoh dance; A comparison between the styles in the choreography of contemporary authors; The fusion of techniques, styles and cultures in contemporary "global dance".

Credits and evaluation
The final oral evaluation will consist in an analysis of the technique and style of an example of dance from the repertoire.
